Format
HOWIE, MD is a zany ½ hour animation for kids, ages 6 to 11, which celebrates originality and out-of-the-box action.
The Short Version
HOWIE, MD looks into the imaginative mind of Howie, as he creates unusual concoctions to cure the neighborhood kids’ wacky ailments, while his prudent nemesis twin brother Nurse Leslie tries to outdo him and take his spot.
Synopsis
Howie Rubenstein is not your run-of-the-mill kid. He’s a doctor… well not quite! When wearing his dad’s oversized lab coat, he becomes every kid’s superhero! No shots, no icky cough syrup…only his famous out-of-this-world concoctions. However, downing root beer, ketchup, and eggs is crazy …especially according to his twin brother and secret archenemy Leslie, the nurse.
As Howie’s imagination runs wild with abnormal ideas to cure the neighborhood kids, Leslie always attempts to put a stop to his plans with reason and logic.
Believing Howie’s ways are senseless, Leslie will do anything to become the doctor. Unfortunately, his logic never works. Ultimately, Howie’s outside-the-box thinking always triumphs and Leslie must try to win the doctor’s spot again.
Main Characters
Howie Rubenstein is an off-beat 10 year old that has a playful mind of his own. His happy-go-lucky, outside-the-box nature is what makes him the best kid doctor on the planet. With weird concoctions of eggs and soda, and other unusual methods of treating the neighborhood kids, he always seems to stumble upon a cure for everything, be it uncontrollable hiccups or sleepwalking. His overly optimistic outlook allows him to find the best in people, but also makes him oblivious to their inner motives.
INTERESTING FACTS
-The younger twin brother of Leslie by two minutes.
-Doesn’t know Clover has a crush on him.
-Loves root beer, which he uses in lots of his concoctions.
Leslie Rubenstein is Howie’s logical and rigid nurse, not to mention his archenemy twin brother. For a 10 year old, he is oddly prudent and uncompromising when it comes to the best way to treat their patients. In the “real” world, Leslie’s methods would cure these kooky ailments, but he always seems to make matters worse. Secretly, he wants to be the doctor and believes Howie is skating by on luck. He tries on Dad’s lab coat when Howie’s not around and continuously comes up with schemes to overthrow Howie and win Clover, the girl of his dreams.
INTERESTING FACTS
-Always says his name “is for boys too!”
-Despises jokes about his giraffe scrubs.
-Avoids trying Howie’s concoctions at all costs.
-Favorite food is marshmallows.
Clover is Howie and Leslie’s neighbor, also 10, who always gets hurt or has a funny illness. From the simple scratch on her hand to non-stop laughing, she always needs Howie and Leslie to find a cure. She is a sweet girl who loves to help, but can be quite clumsy at times. Although a cute girl on the outside, she burps louder and runs faster than any little boy in the neighborhood. After doing something really gross, like spewing candy colored vomit everywhere, she bats her lashes as if nothing has happened. With such a huge crush on Howie, one cannot be sure if her ailments are real or if she’s just making up weird symptoms to see him again and again.
INTERESTING FACTS
-Her favorite pastime is daydreaming about Howie.
-Milk gives her hives, so she snacks on dry cereal.
-She sometimes finds jellybeans in her ears.
TONE
HOWIE, MD is a wacky and upbeat comedy, twisting with conflict when experiments go wrong and jealousy rears its ugly head. Each character lends him/herself to the show’s tone with their fun-loving and quirky natures. The aesthetic is vividly colorful and bright, although Leslie’s dark side comes out in each episode.
EPISODES
The Magical Milkshake
Howie makes a weird concoction to cure Clover’s rumbling stomach, but Leslie decides his common cure is better.
Wakey Wakey
There is a sleepwalking epidemic and Howie must find a rare ingredient for his elixir, which he hopes will wake everyone up.
Mine, All Mine
Leslie decides to make his very own cure all formula.
Giggle-o-itis
Clover has an uncontrollable case of the giggles, which leads Leslie to believe that she actually likes him back.
Finders Keepers, Losers Stinkers
Leslie writes down the perfect recipe for his cure all formula and loses it.
No More Mr. New Guy
Howie’s teacher, Mr. Stencil, has been out sick for a week. Howie must help Mr. Stencil get better before his evil substitute takes over.
The Ol’ Switcheroo
Leslie gives up attempting to make his own cure all formula when he discovers it may be good for something else.
Dread Clover, Dread Clover
Howie thinks he is allergic to Clover. She tries to help him find a cure as Leslie tries to sabotage their work.
A Bitter Pill
Leslie catches a cold and refuses Howie’s help in an attempt to cure himself.
Circus Cure
A kid from a family circus begs Howie and Leslie to help cure his sneezing family so they can perform in their big show.
Oh Brother
Leslie’s cure all formula becomes a big hit , but he struggles to keep up with the orders, causing him to make a bad batch. Now he must decide if he will take Howie’s help or not.
TEAM HOWIE, MD

Ronald Jones, Illustrator, is a B.F.A. graduate of Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur’s Media Arts and Animation program. He works in 2D Animation and Visual Development.

I absolutely adore Clover. She's a cutesy tomboy who bats her beautiful lashes after doing the grossest things--spewing candy vomit and burping loudly. She runs faster than all the boys in the neighborhood and she loves to help out. Isn't she the coolest?!!
